Independent cinema was invented as both a style and a movement in the 1980′s by auteurs such as David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, Joel and Ethan Coen, and David Cronenberg. Though diverse in their approaches, these filmmakers all had in common the goal of artistic independence: they financed their own projects, utilized emerging technology (such as handheld cameras) and drew on the traditions of world cinema and pulp movies for inspiration.

It used to be that Hollywood production companies would only read scripts. They still read scripts, but not as much as in the past. These days, they would prefer to see a short film. The reason for this is because a short film shows the story in motion. It also shows the filmmakers’ talent level. Hollywood producers want to see if they could use the director, cinematographer or anyone else for the feature version of the film.
